Period 2 Debate

In class today a heated debate was started about who is to blame for the murders in the novel Frankenstein. Some argued it was Victor Frankenstein's fault for not taking responsibility for his actions. Others say it was the monster's fault because he physically committed the crimes. B.R. brought up an interesting point about murderers. Do we blame their parents or them? B.T. brought up that children grow up without nurture all the time and they do not necessarily end up like the monster. What do you think? Who can we blame and why?

  1. It is totally 100 percent the monsters fault, the monster has a brain of its own and it cannot only say that it would want to have revenge on Victor Frankenstein just because he left him. If I murdered someone and said it was because my parents didn't show me enough affection the judge would laugh at me and lock me up. You need to look at it in two ways, not one way because you believe that it is "right"! Don't be bias, don't conform!

  2. In this case, I believe it is the Monster's fault since he is completely aware of his actions. If the Monster was brain dead then that would be a different story. He had a CHOICE. It wasn't instinct and it sure wasn't an order from Frankenstein. If you were to murder someone, we wouldn't lock up your parents (who created you). We would lock you up because you made the conscious decision to kill someone.

  3. But if Victor would have taken responsibility and cared for the monster, none of this would have happened...
